For this shoot I want to take photos of water while I'm at the lake in order to really focus on blue and also incorporate a since of texture or patterns. I also want to try and capture the sun reflecting off of the lake in order to give the water a glistening look.
My Shoot:
For this shoot I went to Lake Powell over the weekend and took pictures while we were out fishing. It was pretty cold and windy so it was kind of difficult to capture good images because I didn't want to get my camera wet. But since it was windy the water did have a lot of waves that was really cool to capture glistening in the sun. At first I was also try to figure out how to focus on the water without including the cliffs, but then I decided to included them so that it gave the images more depth.
My Edits:
To edit these images I just turned up the vibrance and brightness. I wanted to keep the images looking as natural as possible while still highlighting my focus color: blue. On a few of the photos I used the magnetic lasso to just select the water so that I could change the hue or the vibrance of the water without doing the same edits to the rest of the image. I didn't really edit the sky, I just kept it the same shade so that the gradient was very obvious and natural.
My Printed Photo:
This is the photo I printed for my Blue shoot, it is titled Calm because blue is supposed to elicit a calm feeling when it is seen. The combination of the blue water and the sky really give this photo a calming sense, even though there is a red cliff in the image the color is not as intriguing as the different shades of blue. The texture of the image also provides an additional element that adds to the photo. There is essentially two different types of blue in the photo. One is a soft baby blue while the other is a darker, almost turquoise blue that seems to have texture from the waves. While editing this image I focused mostly on changing the vibrance and hue of the water so that it was more of a turquoise color. I then used the magnetic lasso to adjust the brightness and contrast of only the water. I wanted to water to be more of a focus than the cliff because the red of the cliff could've become very bright and taken over the picture. I did not edit the sky at all because I really liked the way it looked naturally. I feel like when someone looks at this photo the color of the water and the water itself would make them feel calm and relaxed. Personally, I find being on the lake or anywhere near water very calming and relaxing. Overall, I feel like this image really demonstrates my idea of a "blue shoot" perfectly. In the next few weeks I'm going to be seeing if having people in an image effects the emotion that a specific color is supposed to elicit.
